The big swell that hit on Saturday morning was accompanied by very strong north west winds so the organisers of the competition decided to gamble on better conditions the following day and postponed the event until Sunday. This paid off as the wind died and the waves cleaned up, the head high North swell wasn’t breaking the best, but the more experienced contest surfers reveled in the conditions were most of the locals struggled to find their waves.

Some of the Local crew fell at the first hurdle, with Billy and Ian losing out in the first round, much like fanning in the early CT events they just didn’t have the luck with them. Shim, also knocked out in Round one was especially dejected after finding out bodyboard rolls on a surfboard don’t count as a scoring wave, how different the competition could have been if these rippers had found their feet in the latter rounds.

Dan, Ben and Ryan represented in the Semis and scored well but the gulf in class was apparent as the story of an event dominated by causeway coast surfers unfolded in front of the large appreciative crowd. The finalists, Kieran Skullion, Jim Leftism, Dan Gow and Andrew Mennie put on a fine show and any one of them could have taken it on the day.

Dan’s backhand hacks were particularly impressive as were Andrews flinging flying airy things. Skullion impressed and won the Surfboard for best maneuver of the day for a straight bottom to top turn with fins busting out, but it was his good friend Jim who took this years wildstyle title, consistently out scoring the rest of the field in every round and stringing together multiple high scoring turns on every wave, throwing in the odd 360 here and there to the delight of the onlookers, consistent and impressive throughout the day Jim deserved the title of Wildstyle Winner 2009.

Sounds like good news, however the rate should be -0.4% and the government scamed us by setting it at 0%.

Wildstyle Surf Comp 2009

This years event will take place on the Weekend of the 3rd of October. The competition is open to anyone who can surf, any age, any vehicle (except boats!), and there will be prizes for winners, runners up, and best wipe-out, plus there is a Brand New Hand Shaped Rosy Surfboard to be won on the Day for most radical Manovure (Independantly Juged).

There is free camping in the Dunes at the beach, but if you need more creature comforts there is bed and breakfast at 35 Euro per person just a walk from the beach, or alternatively it works out cheap for a few people to rent one of the many holiday homes in the area.

There will be a prize giving and nightly entertainment in the Caratra Bar, See you there, hopefully the right will crank.

There is a petition running to get the water quality of one of the North Coasts best surfing beaches improved. Has to be signed before the end of August, so get on it.

“Getting a beach classified as an ‘EU bathing water’ brings with it environmental improvements that make the beach cleaner and safer for everyone to use.

From June to September, beaches designated as bathing waters benefit from weekly water quality testing, improved litter management and better facilities that help the public enjoy their time spent at the beach.”
