The Stones of Ballyliffen

There has been many a conversation about the stones on Ballyliffen Beach, are they natural or where they put there to protect the Golf Club from erosion? I have asked surfer and local alike with no certain answer. However an answer I found in an extract from the Golf Clubs AGM on Tuesday 26th February, 1974.

It reads “grave disquiet was expressed by members regarding the dangers of erosion along the seaward boundary of the course. This real threat to the Clubs property, and indeed to the future of golf in Ballyliffin was accentuated by the removal of the natural gravel barriers protecting the coastline.

Thousands of tonnes of gravel were being removed weekly, leaving a sandy coastline to the mercy of the sea. A large tract of property was literally washed away while the Club was concerned environmentalists begged the Council to be responsible and pro -active. Thankfully, albeit slowly, the removal of seashore materials was prohibited by the Council thereby allowing the natural gravel barriers to be re-established”.

The NW Surf Club is showing the Drifter, Rob Machado and Tyler Steele’s new colaboration on the Big Screen at the Nerve Centre Cinema on Friday the 16th April at 7pm.

Everyone Welcome

You can sign up for membership to the surf club on the Night.
Club membership costs €25 for Seniors and €20 for Juniors (under18).
80 percent of membership costs goes to the ISA and to pay individual members Insurance.
The remaining 20 percent the Club uses to put on events throughout the year.

The Club will be advertising its 2010 list of Events shortly.
